Israel’s president denied the country’s involvement in the explosions of pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said on Tuesday that he “categorically rejects any connection” with preparations for an operation to remotely detonate pagers and walkie-talkies in Lebanon. He said this on the air of the British TV channel Sky News, stressing that his country has an “inalienable right” to defend itself.

“I was not implying anything except that there are many enemies of Hezbollah, quite a lot these days. Hezbollah is suffocating and destroying Lebanon, creating chaos in Lebanon again and again and again and again. We’re only here to protect ourselves – that’s all we do, and we make it clear that we have to act as any normal country would act, as Britain or any other sovereign country would act, to protect his people,” said Herzog.

The aggravation of the situation on Israel’s northern border increased after a series of explosions occurred in Lebanon earlier this week, first of pagers, then of walkie-talkies, which are used, in particular, by members of Hezbollah, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and a number of other countries. About 40 people died, about three thousand were injured. The group blamed Israel for the device explosions. The Israeli authorities did not officially confirm or deny involvement in the incidents.

On September 20, Israeli aircraft attacked Beirut. According to the military, the targets of the strikes were Hezbollah commanders. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported the death of 37 people and the wounding of 60. Hezbollah confirmed the death of 16 members of the group, including two commanders.

On September 22, the Israel Defense Forces reported that over a hundred rockets were fired at Israeli territory from Lebanon last night, most of which were intercepted. Israel blamed the pro-Iranian Hezbollah group for the attacks.
