Attackers are using a sneaky new technique to trick Chrome users into revealing their Google account passwords. Data theft begins with limiting the operation of the browser and even the user’s keyboard.
Since August of this year, according to OALABS researchers, hackers have been using new methods to attack users that rely on the Amadey malware downloader and information stealer, which was first deployed back in 2018.
During this wave of attacks, attackers try to obtain Google account login credentials by blocking the Chrome browser. As reported by BleepingComputer, the attacked user suddenly finds that his browser is running in full-screen mode, the Esc and F11 keys do not work, and a page appears on the screen that requires a Google password to unlock the computer. A stressful situation forces the user to enter a password without thinking about the reasons for the computer’s strange behavior. When he does, his password is quickly stolen by the StealC malware and passed back to the hackers behind the campaign. After obtaining the password from the Google account, the fraudsters can take control of the rest of the victim’s accounts on the Internet.
If you are a victim of such an attack, there is an easy way to avoid password theft and get rid of the Chrome freeze page. To do this, it is enough to use various key combinations to close or switch programs (Alt + F4 to close the program, Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open the task manager, Ctrl + Alt + Delete to close the program or restart the computer, Alt + Tab to switch programs).
Quitting Chrome will allow you to run a full computer scan for malware and remove any Amaday or StealC that is detected. The antivirus you use or the built-in Windows Defender program from Microsoft may be suitable for this.
