The EU will help Ukraine secure 4.5 GW of energy capacity next winter out of the 17 required.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced this in Brussels at a joint press conference with the Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, Fatih Birol, reports Ukrinform.

Von der Leyen noted that Russia destroyed “half of the entire energy infrastructure” of Ukraine, which is “equivalent to the power of the three Baltic states combined.”

According to her, the EU has a plan to help Ukraine, which includes recovery, electricity supply and stabilization.

The first stage – this is the repair of energy facilities damaged by Russian shelling. “We aim to restore 2.5 GW of capacity, which is 15% of Ukraine’s needs. We will continue to coordinate all possible support from our member states through the civil protection mechanism,” von der Leyen said.

The second direction – support of the Ukrainian energy system with imports from the EU and development of a decentralized network. “We export 2 GW of electricity to Ukraine, which also covers approximately 12% of the country’s winter needs. This compensates, for example, the equivalent of the loss of electricity production at the Zaporizhia NPP, which is currently under the illegal control of Russia,” she said.

Given the assistance in repairs and exports, the EU will cover more than 25% of Ukraine’s electricity needs for the winter, added the President of the European Commission.

AND the third direction – work on stabilizing the energy system in the country. The EU plans to help boost decentralized energy production, which will include the deployment of more renewable energy sources and help Ukraine become more energy independent. “Rooftop solar power plants are harder to hit and easier to repair than large central infrastructure. This will help ensure a more stable flow of energy in the country,” said the leader of the European Commission.

She added that the EU will cooperate with the Ukrainian authorities to strengthen cyber protection, in particular of the energy system.

The European Union will also provide Ukraine with 160 million euros to help prepare for winter conditions amid Russian strikes on energy infrastructure.

Earlier we wrote that the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she will visit Kyiv on Friday, September 20. The main topic of the negotiations will be Ukraine’s preparation for winter.
