The Latvian-initiated meeting brought together representatives from Romania, Poland and Lithuania to discuss recent violations of NATO airspace by Russian drones, as well as steps at the state and alliance level to strengthen NATO airspace. The defense ministers of Romania, Poland and Latvia signed a joint letter to the allies.

As stated in the Ministry of Defense, Russian aggression continues to create risks and threats for NATO countries, including the violation of airspace by Russian drones. Over the past month, incidents involving Russian drones have occurred not only in Latvia, but also in Romania and Poland. This is a new reality that cannot be ignored and answered, Spruds emphasized.

The ministers believe that NATO countries should strengthen their ability to detect, identify and neutralize low and slow-flying objects, and that air defense rotation should be implemented immediately.

In a joint statement, the ministers of the “Bucharest Nine” condemned Russia’s war against Ukraine. The ministers also strongly condemned Russia for repeated violations of NATO airspace in Latvia, Romania, Poland and other countries of the alliance.

“Bucharest Nine” is a platform for discussing security issues, in which Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria participate.

Romanian Defense Minister Angel Tilvar said that the “Bucharest Nine” countries are “deeply concerned” by the repeated intrusions of Russian drones and missiles into NATO airspace, adding that such situations require a “decisive” response.

We will remind that earlier in September in Latvia, the fall of a Russian military drone was recorded on the territory of the country.

According to preliminary data, the drone flew from the territory of Belarus and was equipped with explosives.

After that, as well as another downing of Russian drones in Romania, NATO again started a discussion about how to respond to similar incidents in its airspace.
