The absolute champion of the world in the first heavyweight and heavyweight Oleksandr Usyk said that “his detention at the airport in Krakow (Poland) was a misunderstanding.”

The Ukrainian boxer emphasized on Instagram that “the incident is over and he is free.” According to Usyk, “there was a misunderstanding that was quickly resolved.”

He expressed his gratitude to society and diplomats for their support due to this incident.

“Respect to Polish law enforcement officers who do their job, despite their height, weight, arms and regalia,” the athlete wrote.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiga revealed details of Usyk’s release after being detained at the Krakow airport on the X network.

The official noted that representatives of the ministry, on the instructions of the president, “immediately reacted to the detention” of the champion in Krakow and “facilitated his release.”

“Our consul general told me the details. We consider such actions disproportionate and unacceptable towards our champion and will send a corresponding note to the Polish side,” said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine added that Sybiga “coordinated the actions of Ukrainian diplomats while on the border of Ukraine and Romania, where the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now heading for his first foreign visit.”

Earlier, on September 17, Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk was arrested at Krakow airport, Zhan Beleniuk, the first deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Youth and Sports, said.

Later, President Volodymyr Zelensky clarified that Usyk was released.

“I was outraged by this attitude towards our citizen and champion. “I instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sibiza and the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko to immediately find out all the details of the incident at the Krakow airport,” the head of state said.
