Taras Kremin, the state language protection commissioner, issued 49 warnings and applied 16 fines for violating the language law on the Internet since the beginning of 2024.

“Since the beginning of 2024, 421 complaints have been received regarding the violation of the sixth part of Article 27 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State”, which regulates the use of the state language on the Internet (which is almost 50% less than during this period in 2023) “, he wrote on Facebook.

According to his data, in 2024, 161 measures of state control over business entities were initiated based on citizens’ complaints, which were managed to be established – most Internet resources at the time of state control measures eliminated violations of the language law.

Taras Kremin informed that as of September 10, 2024, 49 warnings have already been issued and 16 fines have been imposed for violation of Article 27 (for the lack of a Ukrainian-language version of the site or for loading the site by default in a non-state language).

Websites, web pages in social networks of state authorities, local self-government bodies, enterprises, institutions and organizations of state and communal forms of ownership, media registered in Ukraine, as well as business entities selling goods and services in Ukraine and registered in Ukraine, performed in the state language. Along with the version of the online representations made in the state language, there may be versions in other languages.

From July 16, 2022, the version of the Internet representation in the state language must have no less information in terms of volume and content than the foreign language versions, and be downloaded by default for users in Ukraine.

During the first half of 2024, the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language received more than 1,000 appeals from citizens from all regions of Ukraine regarding violations of the law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as a State Language”. As language ombudsman Taras Kremin said in an interview with Radio Liberty, a third of them relate to the lack of a Ukrainian version of the sites of online stores and websites through which consumer services are provided, in second place – violations in the field of service, and in the third place – information about goods and services.
