This was stated by the Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Ruben Breckelmans, in a comment to LRT TELEVISION.He noted that the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine remains difficult, and Russia is really strong now.
“I don’t think the war will end this year, I don’t think it will end next year either. Of course we need to give Ukraine as much military support as possible, but we need to be realistic because the situation on the battlefield is very difficult. This means, that we should do more, but we should also not overestimate our expectations,” he explained.
Breckelmans emphasized that it is necessary to look at the long-term perspective and make sure that the citizens of Europe continue to want to support Ukraine, “so we should not create false expectations so that people are not disappointed.”
“Because sometimes people think that the Russian invasion was a sprint that turned into a marathon, but it’s actually a 42 km race, so we have to keep going,” the Dutch defense minister emphasized.
He added that it is necessary to be optimistic, but at the same time realistic. According to him, Russia is a really powerful opponent and can wage this war with such intensity for a very long time.
“If you look at the estimates of what the Russian military industry will be able to produce and the number of people it can mobilize, these numbers are really huge. Russia plays a numbers game, and it is very difficult for Ukraine to defend against it,” Brekelmans added.
