Great Britain “will not act on its own” in the matter of granting Ukraine permission to strike targets in Russia with long-range weapons, writes The Times with reference to a source.

The British government believes that American guidance systems are crucial to hitting targets with long-range missiles. London believes the U.S. is likely to authorize the strikes at the UN General Assembly session, which opens on September 10, although President Joe Biden’s administration is divided on this.

On September 16, the spokesman of the US State Department, Matthew Miller, in response to the journalists’ question whether the decision to strike long-range American weapons against targets in Russia had been made, replied that he had “no announcements” about changes in the White House’s policy on this issue.

On September 11, after the joint visit of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his British counterpart David Lammy to Kyiv, The Guardian newspaper, citing sources, wrote that Great Britain allowed Ukraine to use Storm Shadow cruise missiles to strike targets on Russian territory. However, no public announcements were made either during the visit or after it.

On September 14, The Times wrote that five former British defense ministers and the country’s former prime minister Boris Johnson appealed to current Prime Minister Keir Starmer to allow Ukraine to use Storm Shadow missiles against targets in Russia even without US support. On the same day, a meeting between Keir Starmer and Joe Biden took place, as a result of which there were no statements on this issue.
