Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian says his country has not transferred weapons to Russia since he took office in late July. This was announced by a senior Iranian official on September 16 at a press conference broadcast on national television.

“It is quite possible that supplies (of some types of weapons – ed.) took place in the past … but I can assure you that since I took office there have been no such supplies to Russia,” he said.

Recently, Western media reported that Tehran provided the Kremlin with powerful surface-to-surface ballistic missiles.

Tehran has also faced Western condemnation and new sanctions for sending weapons to Russia that the Kremlin uses to attack Ukrainian forces and civilians, including the deadly Shahed drones. Iran can no longer supply such drones – Russia has acquired the technology for their production and can produce them independently, under the name “Geranium”.

Pezeshkian, 69, considered by some observers to be a relative moderate, is the most senior Iranian official elected in a nationwide vote. Despite such a mandate of the president, Iran’s policy in the most fundamental issues is determined not by him, but by the spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
