Filming of the film almanac War through the eyes of animals, which took place in Ukraine and the USA with the participation of Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Sean Penn, as well as famous Ukrainian actors, has ended.
The main character of the seventh novella of the film almanac called Torpedo was a goat, as well as a grandmother and a boy, who find themselves in the territory of southern Ukraine occupied by Russian troops in the summer of 2022.
“I thought for a long time about how to make films about war. Propaganda does not work – human stories do. That’s why lately I’ve been shooting a lot of short stories about different people, trying to find my hero, – noted the author of the script and director of the film Ivan Sautkin. — And after Torpedo, I felt that I had found it, because this story is about how simple a person can be strong. I am interested in those who, even in an extremely difficult situation, do not choose the role of a victim. Even if you are a defenseless old woman with only a goat, you can become a hero, there is always a choice.”
The plot of this novel, like most of the stories of War through the eyes of animals, has a documentary basis and the authors consider it the most dramatic of all the films of the film almanac.

“The story about the grandmother, who transmitted the coordinates of enemy equipment to our gunners, was one of the first that I proposed to shoot as soon as I saw the plot in the telethon in the spring of 2022. We even talked to eyewitnesses of those events – said Oleg Kokhan, the author of the idea and producer of War through the Eyes of Animals. — But why is there a goat, the authors of the film have already decided. After all, it was in this short story that we showed not only how Ukrainians experience the horrors of war, but also the resistance offered to the occupiers by those who cannot hold a weapon, meeting a Russian soldier face to face – old, small, even animals and saints from icons.”
Popular popular blogger from Lviv, Olga Martynyshyn, who played the role of grandmother Sonka, shared with her fans during filming (their TikTok 114,000) impressions of Kyiv and the first filming experience in the format of direct inclusions, and the performer of the role of Lyonchik, Nazariy Gladyuk, decided to create his own YouTube channel to talk about the creative potential of people with special needs.
“I hope the animals will help us tell the world about this war, – says Ms. Olya. – Because the little girl doesn’t just see everything, she feels and understands a lot. It is necessary for everyone in the world to understand what is happening here and why my grandmother Sonka is doing exactly that.”
We will remind that the heroes of the previous novels by directors Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, Andrii Lidagovskyi, Yulia Shashkova, Maks Tuzov, Svyatoslav Kostyuk and Oleksiy Mamedov were a wolf, a white rabbit, a cow, a cat, an eagle and even fish.
The first trailer of the film almanac was presented at the Berlin International Film Festival. At the end of the editing period of the film almanac, the world premiere of War Through the Eyes of Animals is planned as part of an international film festival, after which Ukrainian viewers will see the film.
