Yaroslav ‘Mazhor’ Chernychev, a soldier and co-founder of the military community North Side Group, has been reported killed while fighting against Russian forces. His death was confirmed through a post on the North Side Group’s Telegram channel, although specific circumstances surrounding his passing have not been disclosed.
Chernychev, originally from Kharkiv, joined the Ukrainian military in 2016 at the age of 18. In an interview, he recounted his decision to enlist shortly after graduating from high school, stating, “I went to the military enlistment office just a week after receiving my diploma. I told them I didn’t understand the numbers of brigades; I just wanted to go where the fighting was. They said, ‘Okay, you’ll go to the 53rd mechanized brigade.'”
After serving until 2018, he left the military and worked in security before rejoining the armed forces a year later. In 2020, he became part of the 25th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. Following the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Chernychev participated in the defense of his hometown, Kharkiv.
Recent Losses Among Ukrainian Forces
On March 9, news emerged regarding the death of Oleksandr Dovhach, the commander of the 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade and a Hero of Ukraine. Dovhach lost his life while performing a combat mission in the eastern region, as reported by the Ukrainian Air Force.
Earlier, on February 15, Ukrainian athlete and coach Dmytro Rusetsky was killed in action against Russian forces in Sumy Oblast. Rusetsky was a multiple-time champion of Ukraine and a winner of several World Cup titles in kickboxing.
