Ukrainian Officials Detained in Corruption Case Involving Aircraft Shelters

The High Anti-Corruption Court of Ukraine has ordered the detention of two senior military officials suspected of corruption related to the construction of aircraft shelters. Colonel Volodymyr Kompanichenko, head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Zhytomyr region, is being held for 60 days, with bail set at approximately 6.9 million hryvnias.

According to reports from Radio Svoboda, Kompanichenko did not comment on the accusations during the court proceedings. His legal team also declined to provide statements regarding the case.

In a related development, Colonel Andrii Ukrainets, commander of logistics for the Ukrainian Air Force, has also been detained under similar charges. The court has imposed a 60-day detention period for him as well, with bail set at 7 million hryvnias.

The hearings were conducted behind closed doors, a request made by both the prosecution and the defense.

Details of the Corruption Allegations

This week, both officials were apprehended as part of an investigation into corruption during the construction of protective structures for military aircraft. Sources within law enforcement indicate that the SBU detained Ukrainets and Kompanichenko for allegedly orchestrating a scheme to misappropriate state funds.

The investigation focuses on the establishment of additional protective measures at strategically significant sites, including operational airfields for defense forces. In May 2025, a budget of 1.4 billion hryvnias was allocated for the construction of modular arch shelters.

Subsequent inspections revealed that the projects did not meet safety standards, the shelters failed to provide adequate protection for aircraft, and the costs were inflated. Despite these findings, advance payments were made to contractors. To conceal the misappropriation of funds and halt further investigations, officials reportedly arranged to receive an illicit benefit of approximately 13 million hryvnias.

Both suspects were arrested while allegedly accepting a bribe of 320,000 dollars.
