Ukraine has been identified as one of the thirty countries globally with the highest proportion of elderly citizens. Currently, nearly 22% of its population is aged 65 and older, according to Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity, Denys Uliutin.
During a meeting with Masashi Nakagome, Japan’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Uliutin highlighted the significance of this demographic trend. He stated, “Ukraine is among the thirty countries with the oldest populations, with almost 22% of Ukrainians being 65 years or older.” This demographic shift poses various challenges and opportunities for the country.
Uliutin expressed Ukraine’s interest in leveraging Japan’s experience in integrating older adults into active community life. He proposed Japan as a strategic partner in promoting the initiative of “Active Longevity.” This initiative aims to enhance accessibility through the development of barrier-free infrastructure, provision of rehabilitation aids, and creation of inclusive pathways.
The Japanese Ambassador acknowledged the potential for deeper collaboration in the social sector, emphasizing the value of Ukraine’s approaches to addressing significant challenges.
Pension Increases on the Horizon
As reported by UNIAN, starting March 1, Ukraine is set to implement a pension recalculation, which includes an indexation of 12.1%. This adjustment exceeds last year’s inflation rate by 4%. Uliutin anticipates that the base pension will be no less than 6,000 hryvnias, as the Pension Fund’s budget for the year estimates an average pension of 6,500 hryvnias.
