As spring temperatures rise, the ice on Ukraine’s waterways is becoming increasingly unsafe for travel. Experts from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center have warned that while the surface may appear solid, it is actually fragile and unstable.
The warming weather, along with currents and sunlight, is causing the ice to thin and break apart. “During this period, the ice may look continuous, but it is already brittle and unreliable. Stepping onto such ice is extremely dangerous, as it can collapse at any moment,” officials stated.
In light of these warnings, authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and avoid walking on ice-covered bodies of water.
Tragic Incident in Kharkiv
On March 12, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported a tragic incident in Kharkiv where six children fell through the ice. A local resident managed to rescue four of them, but unfortunately, two boys aged 10 and 17 lost their lives.
