The Russian Orthodox Church is facing backlash following a controversial decision by Patriarch Kirill to suspend priest Andrei Kurayev from performing religious duties. This action comes in the wake of Kurayev’s remarks about a deceased priest who succumbed to COVID-19.
According to a statement from the Moscow City Diocese, the suspension was prompted by complaints regarding Kurayev’s previous actions. The decree explicitly states that he is barred from conducting any priestly functions until a church court can review the allegations against him.
The controversy centers around Kurayev’s public comments about Father Alexander Ageikin, the rector of the Epiphany Cathedral in Moscow, who died from the virus. Kurayev referred to Ageikin as a “stupid careerist” and criticized his rise within the church hierarchy, suggesting that he lacked genuine merit.
In his blog, Kurayev expressed disdain for the late priest’s legacy, pointing out that Ageikin had not received the title of protodeacon due to what he described as minor reforms implemented by Kirill. This commentary has drawn widespread condemnation, especially considering it was made on the day of Ageikin’s passing, which many have deemed disrespectful.
As the church navigates this internal conflict, it also faces a broader public health crisis. Moscow reported a record number of COVID-19 fatalities, with 67 individuals dying in a single day, all of whom had confirmed pneumonia.
