Ukrainian Indoor Athletics Championship 2026: Maguchikh Claims High Jump Title

The 2026 Ukrainian Indoor Athletics Championship featured a standout event in women’s high jump, showcasing the nation’s top athletes. Among the competitors was Olympic champion and world record holder Yaroslav Maguchikh, who made her return to the championship for the first time since 2021.

Joining her in the competition were fellow athletes Yuliya Levchenko, Kateryna Tabashnyk, and Iryna Herashchenko, who was participating in her third official event after a maternity break. A total of 13 jumpers from four regions and Kyiv took part in the competition, with two athletes achieving personal bests and one recording her best result of the 2026 season.

Competition Highlights

  • The first round saw Kira Pahalovych and Sofia Prokopenko eliminated after failing to clear the bar set at 1.65 meters. The next height of 1.70 meters saw Vitalina Lyman and Melania Vakulina exit the competition, while Anastasia Kovalchuk was eliminated at 1.75 meters.
  • At 1.79 meters, the leading athletes began their attempts. Yuliya Levchenko, Iryna Herashchenko, and Kateryna Tabashnyk were joined by Iryna Bezsmertna and Anastasia Volkova. Liliya Klintsova and Oksana Okuneva cleared this height on their third attempts, allowing all seven athletes to advance to the next round.
  • Five jumpers remained at 1.87 meters, with Volkova, Klintsova, and Okuneva unable to clear 1.83 meters. Iryna Bezsmertna did not use her three attempts at 1.87 meters, finishing in fifth place.
  • At 1.90 meters, four of Ukraine’s top jumpers competed, including Yaroslav Maguchikh, who cleared the height on her first attempt. Iryna Herashchenko also succeeded on her first try, while Yuliya Levchenko required two attempts.
  • Kateryna Tabashnyk’s competition ended at this height after she sustained an injury during her jump, necessitating medical attention before she was carried off on a stretcher.
  • Maguchikh opted to skip 1.93 meters, while Levchenko cleared it on her second attempt and Herashchenko on her third, achieving her best result since returning.
  • Only Maguchikh and Levchenko cleared 1.96 meters, with Herashchenko finishing with the bronze medal. Maguchikh needed two attempts to clear, while Levchenko required three, matching her personal season record.
  • Maguchikh also bypassed 1.98 meters, and Levchenko attempted 2.00 meters but was unsuccessful, ultimately securing the silver medal.
  • Yaroslav Maguchikh emerged as the new Ukrainian champion, surpassing Levchenko on attempts at 1.96 meters. Following her victory, the Olympic champion continued to compete in the sector.
