Ukrainian Fencer Roman Svichkar Claims First World Cup Gold in Kazakhstan

Ukrainian fencer Roman Svichkar secured his first gold medal at the World Cup stages, triumphing in the final against local athlete Ruslan Kurbanov in Astana, Kazakhstan.

The final day of the World Cup event featured men’s competitions, with 264 competitors, including eight representatives from Ukraine, participating in the men’s foil category.

Svichkar, hailing from Kharkiv, achieved victory over Kurbanov with a score of 15-12, marking a significant milestone in his fencing career.

On his path to gold, Svichkar also defeated Egypt’s Mohamed El-Sayed, a bronze medalist from the 2024 Olympics, with a decisive score of 15-7.

Significance of Svichkar’s Achievement:

  • This victory marks Svichkar’s first gold medal at the World Cup level; previously, he had only secured a bronze at the 2019 event in Bern.
  • It is the first medal for Ukraine in the current World Cup season.
  • The last time Ukrainian fencers reached the podium was in May 2025, when Vlada Kharkova won bronze in the foil event.
  • For the Ukrainian team, this is the first gold medal since February 2024, when Olga Kharlan won a World Cup stage in Lima in sabre fencing.
  • Svichkar is the first male Ukrainian fencer to win gold since 2022, when Volodymyr Stankevych claimed victory at the World Cup stage in Tbilisi.

In 2025, Svichkar also made history as the first Ukrainian European champion since 1994, defeating the host country’s Matteo Garassi. The two fencers met again in the quarterfinals of the World Cup stage.

Roman Svichkar's victory in Kazakhstan marks a significant achievement for Ukrainian fencing, being his first World Cup gold and the nation's first medal of the season. This win not only highlights Svichkar's personal success but also revitalizes Ukraine's presence in international fencing competitions.
