Ukraine’s Energy System Faces Strain Despite End of Heating Season

As of April 9, Ukraine’s energy system continues to experience significant stress, even with the conclusion of the heating season. This situation is attributed to damage to infrastructure and limited operational capacity of energy facilities due to previous Russian attacks, compounded by adverse weather conditions.

DTEK, a major energy company in Ukraine, reported that energy providers are once again implementing consumption restrictions to stabilize the performance of damaged infrastructure amid challenging weather.

“Colder temperatures increase demand while solar generation declines. Cloudy weather significantly reduces energy production from solar plants, leading to a loss of daytime resources that typically help balance the load. Therefore, we must reintroduce power outage schedules,” DTEK explained.

The company emphasized that energy workers are tirelessly addressing the aftermath of Russian strikes, clearing debris from affected sites, repairing damaged equipment, and striving to restore lost capacity to the energy system as quickly as possible.

“Due to the extent of the damage, this process takes time, but work is ongoing without interruption,” DTEK stated in its announcement.

Furthermore, the company urged Ukrainians to conserve energy, particularly during peak consumption hours.

Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains under pressure due to prior attacks and adverse weather, prompting DTEK to implement consumption limits. The company is actively working to restore services while urging citizens to save energy during peak times.
