Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, announced that the country has successfully repatriated 6,422 citizens from Russian captivity, including 409 civilians. This achievement reflects ongoing efforts to address the issue of detainees amid the ongoing conflict.
In a recent Telegram update, Lubinets detailed the outcomes of the previous year, emphasizing the mechanisms in place for the return of deported and forcibly displaced children, as well as unlawfully held civilians and military personnel. He noted that among those returned, 2,016 were children, with 419 of these cases facilitated by the Ombudsman’s Office.
The latest prisoner exchange, which occurred on February 5, 2026, saw the return of 150 military personnel and seven civilians. This exchange marks a continuing commitment to secure the release of Ukrainian citizens held in Russia.
Earlier in February, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that approximately 7,000 Ukrainian prisoners were still in Russian custody, indicating the scale of the ongoing challenge faced by the Ukrainian government in securing the freedom of its citizens.
