Ukraine Reports Significant Russian Military Losses Amid Ongoing Conflict

As of April 6, 2023, the Ukrainian General Staff has reported that Russia has lost approximately 1,304,490 military personnel since the onset of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This figure includes 940 personnel lost in just the last day.

Ukrainian authorities have also released detailed statistics on Russian military equipment losses, highlighting the following figures:

  • Tanks: 11,841 (an increase of 2 in the last day)
  • Armored fighting vehicles: 24,350 (up by 10)
  • Artillery systems: 39,497 (an increase of 58)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems: 1,719
  • Air defense systems: 1,338
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 350
  • Tactical drones: 221,396 (up by 1,953)
  • Cruise missiles: 4,517
  • Ships/boats: 33
  • Submarines: 2
  • Vehicles and tankers: 87,614 (an increase of 259)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,112

Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last reported figure of 5,937 casualties released in September 2022.

Investigative journalists from the Russian outlet Meduza, along with the BBC Russian Service and volunteer teams, have identified the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers who have died in the conflict since February 2022. They note that this list is incomplete, as not all casualty information is publicly accessible.

Estimates of total Russian losses, including both killed and wounded, are significantly higher according to international organizations and intelligence sources. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, suggested that the total number of casualties could approach 1.15 million.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has been reticent in sharing its own casualty figures, with President Volodymyr Zelensky stating that detailed information would be released after the war. However, he has periodically updated the public, revealing in early February 2026 that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since the beginning of the conflict, while also acknowledging a significant number of individuals classified as missing.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi noted on January 13, 2023, that the Ukrainian military managed to reduce personnel losses by 13% in 2025, though he did not provide specific numbers regarding Ukrainian casualties.

Recent reports from Ukraine indicate substantial Russian military losses since the invasion began, with over 1.3 million personnel reported lost. Ukrainian authorities have also detailed significant losses in military equipment, while casualty estimates from various sources suggest even higher figures for Russia.
