Ukraine is grappling with a significant energy deficit, according to Kirilo Budanov, head of the President’s Office. He warned that the upcoming heating season for 2026-2027 will be particularly challenging due to ongoing issues in the energy sector.
Budanov made these remarks during a meeting with the CEO Club Ukraine, highlighting the extensive damage inflicted on the country’s energy infrastructure by Russian airstrikes. These attacks have resulted in widespread power outages, heating disruptions, and water supply issues affecting millions across Ukraine.
“We are facing a huge problem with energy. It’s not just about power outages; we have reached a point where we are experiencing a significant deficit. The figures are alarming, to say the least,” Budanov stated.
He also pointed out that electricity prices in Ukraine are currently the highest in Europe, which undermines the competitiveness of Ukrainian businesses. Budanov emphasized the need for alternative energy solutions and the development of small-scale generation capabilities.
“We need to consider alternative paths. The situation depends on how long the current circumstances persist. Since we lack a unanimous answer, we cannot provide a direct response to your question,” he added.
Even if the conflict were to end soon, Budanov indicated that energy challenges will remain. He stressed the urgency of preparation for the approaching winter, stating, “We have never faced such a difficult situation before. Winter is approaching, and we must start preparing now.”
