U.S. Settles Partial Debt to United Nations Amid Ongoing Financial Concerns

The United States has made a payment of approximately $160 million towards its nearly $4 billion debt to the United Nations, as confirmed by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric. This payment, which was received last week, is intended for the UN’s regular operational budget.

The UN has indicated that the U.S. owes $2.196 billion to its regular budget, including $767 million for the current year. Additionally, there is a separate debt of $1.8 billion related to UN peacekeeping operations.

During a recent speech at the inaugural session of the “Peace Council,” President Donald Trump stated, “We will help them financially and ensure the viability of the United Nations. I think it will eventually fulfill its potential. It will be a great day.” However, he also criticized the UN for not being adequately involved in conflict resolution compared to his proposed “Peace Council.”

“I won’t be here forever. I believe the UN will be much stronger. The Peace Council will oversee the UN and ensure its proper functioning,” Trump remarked.

Previously, Trump had claimed he could easily resolve the organization’s financial issues by compelling other nations to pay their outstanding contributions. However, he did not clarify whether the U.S. would settle its own debts to the UN.

UN officials have expressed concerns about potential reductions in the organization’s activities or even the possibility of closing its New York headquarters due to financial shortfalls. Trump dismissed such concerns.

In recent years, the U.S. has withdrawn from several UN bodies, including the World Health Organization and 31 international organizations under the UN umbrella, as well as announced its exit from UNESCO.

The U.S. has made a partial payment towards its UN debt, addressing some financial obligations while raising concerns about the organization's future operations. President Trump's remarks highlight ongoing tensions regarding the UN's role and funding.
