U.S. Considers Ground Operation to Secure Iran’s Kharg Island Amid Rising Tensions

Recent reports indicate that the United States is contemplating a ground military operation aimed at securing Kharg Island, a critical oil export hub for Iran. This decision comes as U.S. military forces are being rapidly deployed in the Middle East, reflecting escalating tensions in the region.

According to sources cited by The Jerusalem Post, high-ranking U.S. officials have communicated to their counterparts in Israel and other nations that military action may be necessary to prevent Iran from obstructing shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz. Kharg Island, located in the Persian Gulf, is vital for Iran’s oil exports, with approximately 90% of its crude oil destined for China.

One U.S. official confirmed to The Jerusalem Post that thousands of Marines and naval personnel are being deployed to the region. This includes the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, which consists of an amphibious assault ship functioning as a light aircraft carrier, along with the transport ships USS Portland and USS Comstock.

In a related development, a coalition of countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan has expressed readiness to contribute to efforts aimed at ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Former President Donald Trump previously stated that the U.S. does not utilize the Strait of Hormuz and suggested that countries reliant on it should take responsibility for its security. His recent comments have included warnings about NATO’s future if member nations do not assist in restoring navigation through this strategically important waterway.

Trump criticized NATO allies for their reluctance to participate in operations to unblock the Strait, asserting that the U.S. could manage the situation independently. He has also referred to NATO as a “paper tiger,” indicating his dissatisfaction with the alliance’s current state.

In the backdrop of these developments, European natural gas prices have surged following Iranian missile strikes that damaged the world’s largest liquefied natural gas export facility in Qatar. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities with Iran, warning that the ongoing conflict is detrimental to economies.

Reports have also emerged that the United Kingdom has dispatched military officers to the U.S. to assist in formulating a plan to unblock the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed due to the ongoing conflict in Iran.

The U.S. is reportedly considering a military operation to secure Kharg Island, a key oil export site for Iran, as tensions rise in the region. This potential action coincides with increased military deployments and international discussions on securing shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
