Former President Donald Trump has demanded that Netflix remove Susan Rice from its board of directors. This request comes as the streaming platform seeks approval from antitrust regulators for its proposed acquisition of Warner Bros. studios.
Trump made his remarks on his social media platform, Truth Social, referring to Rice as a “racist” and a “political hack.” His comments followed a critique from ally Laura Loomer, who suggested that Trump should intervene to block Netflix’s deal with Warner Bros. Loomer has been vocal about removing several national security officials whom she claims are disloyal to Trump.
Netflix has proposed a $72 billion deal to acquire Warner Bros. studios and HBO Max, which is currently under review by the U.S. Department of Justice. The deal is part of Netflix’s strategy to expand its content offerings in a competitive streaming market.
In addition to Netflix’s bid, Paramount is also pursuing a complete acquisition of Warner Bros., including its cable division, which operates channels like CNN and TNT. Paramount’s offer is valued at approximately $77.9 billion.
Reports indicate that Warner Bros. has agreed to grant Paramount a seven-day negotiation window to submit its “best and final” offer. Following this period, Netflix will have the opportunity to match any proposal made by Paramount.
The U.S. Department of Justice is currently evaluating whether Netflix’s planned acquisition could enhance its market power or lead to monopolistic practices.
Susan Rice, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was a member of Netflix’s board from 2018 to 2021 and rejoined in 2023. Previously, she held the position of chief executive at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which Trump was elected to lead last year.
In December, the White House announced plans to rename the Kennedy Center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, although Democrats have argued that its board lacks the authority to alter the memorial’s name, which was established by law.
Donald Trump has called for Susan Rice's removal from Netflix's board as the company seeks to finalize its acquisition of Warner Bros. The demand comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the deal by the U.S. Department of Justice.
