Recent reports indicate a significant increase in the export of drones from Thailand to Russia, with a notable correlation to the rising import of these unmanned aerial vehicles from China. According to Bloomberg, this trend has been observed since 2022, raising concerns among Ukrainian officials.
In the first eleven months of the previous year, Russia imported drones worth $125 million from Thailand. This figure represents 88% of Thailand’s total drone exports and marks an eightfold increase compared to the previous year’s purchases. Notably, in 2022, Thailand’s drone exports amounted to less than $1 million, with none directed towards Russia.
In 2025, China reportedly exported drones to Thailand valued at $186 million, further solidifying the relationship between the two nations in this sector.
The Director-General of Thailand’s Customs Department has stated that the export of Chinese drones from Thailand is conducted legally. He emphasized that Thai legislation does not require the declaration of the intended use of drones upon import.
Bloomberg highlights that Thailand has become an essential supply channel for drones, particularly after Western nations implemented measures to restrict earlier routes through the UAE and Kazakhstan.
The surge in drone exports from Thailand to Russia, primarily sourced from China, reflects a strategic shift in supply routes amid international sanctions. This development raises significant geopolitical implications as countries adapt to evolving trade dynamics.
