The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) has detained a Russian citizen in Stockholm, following an international arrest warrant issued by the United States. The arrest, which took place in late December 2025, is linked to allegations of serious crimes related to violations of US sanctions between 2022 and 2023.
Jonathan Svensson, a spokesperson for Säpo, confirmed the detention but refrained from providing specific details, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation and the agency’s assistance to the US authorities. He stated, “The case concerns an international arrest warrant. As the Security Service is aiding another country in its criminal investigation, we cannot delve into specifics.”
Lars Hedvall, a senior prosecutor at the National Security Division, corroborated that the decision to detain the individual was made after receiving an official request from US authorities. During a search of the detainee’s residence, Säpo officials confiscated mobile phones and other items.
The detainee is currently being held in custody, with a Stockholm district court ruling that he remain in isolation until the extradition proceedings are concluded. The final decision regarding his extradition to the United States will be made by the Swedish Attorney General, the Supreme Court, and the government.
Details regarding the specific charges against the individual have not been disclosed by Swedish law enforcement, citing the confidentiality of the investigation in the United States. The name and other identifying information of the arrested individual have also not been released.
