Serbian Authorities Dismiss Ukrainian Involvement in Gas Pipeline Incident

Serbian officials have ruled out any connection to Ukraine in a reported attempted sabotage of a gas pipeline leading to Hungary. Djuro Jovanic, the director of Serbia’s Military Security Agency, stated that there is no evidence linking Ukrainian explosives to the incident.

Jovanic emphasized that misinformation suggesting the Serbian Armed Forces might be acting on behalf of another party is unfounded. He noted, “The producer of explosives does not imply that they are the executor or instigator.” Furthermore, he indicated that markings on the explosives suggest they were manufactured in the United States.

On April 5, Serbian authorities reported the discovery of large packages containing explosives and detonators near the gas pipeline. In response, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban convened a National Security Council meeting, which resulted in the decision to place the Hungarian section of the Turkish Stream pipeline under military protection.

Prior to this incident, Hungary had already increased security measures for its energy infrastructure, citing a perceived threat from Ukraine. Serbia has also mobilized its military to safeguard the gas supply route to Hungary.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto hinted at possible Ukrainian involvement in the thwarted sabotage attempt. However, officials in Kyiv have categorically rejected these allegations, suggesting a potential Russian influence in the matter, particularly concerning interference in Hungary’s elections in support of Orban.

Meanwhile, Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition party Tisza, has characterized the events as a staged operation that could disrupt the upcoming elections in Hungary.

Serbian authorities have dismissed claims of Ukrainian involvement in a recent gas pipeline incident, emphasizing that the explosives found were made in the United States. The situation has led to heightened security measures in both Serbia and Hungary amid ongoing political tensions.
