Russian Military Casualties in Ukraine Conflict Reach Over 1.27 Million, Reports Ukrainian General Staff

As of March 13, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russian military casualties since the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine have surpassed 1.27 million, with 860 soldiers lost in the past day alone.

The General Staff also provided detailed figures regarding the losses of Russian military equipment:

  • 11,773 tanks (+7 in the last day)
  • 24,202 armored fighting vehicles (+5)
  • 38,369 artillery systems (+50)
  • 1,685 multiple rocket launchers (+4)
  • 1,331 air defense systems (+2)
  • 435 aircraft
  • 349 helicopters
  • 175,139 operational-tactical drones (+2,071)
  • 4,403 cruise missiles
  • 31 ships or boats
  • 2 submarines
  • 83,223 vehicles and fuel tankers (+189)
  • 4,088 units of special equipment

Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last public figure reported in September 2022, when the Kremlin stated that 5,937 soldiers had been killed.

In contrast, journalists from the Russian publication Meduza, the BBC Russian Service, and a team of volunteers have identified over 200,000 names of Russian servicemen who have died in the conflict since February 2022, based on publicly available sources. However, they note that this list is incomplete, as not all casualty information is accessible.

Estimates of total Russian losses, including both wounded and killed, from international organizations and intelligence agencies are significantly higher. In December 2025, a NATO official, speaking anonymously, informed the BBC Russian Service that the total number of killed and wounded in the Russian army could approach 1.15 million. The official indicated that in November, daily losses for Russia averaged around 1,100 personnel.

On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky has been reticent about disclosing casualty figures, stating that such information would be released after the war. However, he has shared updates approximately once a year. In an interview with France 2 in early February 2026, he mentioned that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since the beginning of the conflict, along with a significant number of individuals classified as missing.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi stated on January 13 of this year that efforts in 2025 had resulted in a 13% reduction in personnel losses, although he did not provide specific figures regarding Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian General Staff reports that Russian military casualties have exceeded 1.27 million since the start of the invasion. Detailed figures on equipment losses were also released, while estimates from various sources suggest that the true toll may be significantly higher.
