Poland’s President Advocates for Nuclear Program Without Government Consultation

The President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, has publicly expressed support for a nuclear initiative, raising concerns about a lack of consultation with government officials. This statement was confirmed by government spokesperson Adam Szlapka, who emphasized that no discussions had occurred between the president and the government regarding this matter.

Szlapka pointed out that the authority to pursue a potential nuclear program lies with the government, not the presidency. He stressed the importance of careful consideration before making such public declarations, noting that Poland must adhere to its international commitments, including existing treaties.

On February 15, Nawrocki declared himself a strong advocate for Poland’s involvement in nuclear capabilities, asserting that the country should develop its own nuclear potential while complying with international standards.

Bloomberg previously reported that a group of European nations has begun exploring options for their own nuclear deterrence, driven by waning confidence in the reliability of the United States as an ally. Currently, only France and the United Kingdom possess their own nuclear arsenals within Europe.

Poland has consistently indicated its willingness to host U.S. nuclear weapons on its territory. Former President Andrzej Duda proposed this idea in the spring of 2025, suggesting that the relocation of nuclear warheads to Poland could serve as a deterrent against potential aggression from Russia.

Additionally, last spring, during a national address, French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to initiate strategic discussions with EU leaders regarding the use of French nuclear weapons to safeguard the European continent.

Poland's President Karol Nawrocki has voiced support for a nuclear program, prompting concerns over the lack of government consultation. The government spokesperson highlighted that such decisions should be within the purview of the administration, emphasizing adherence to international agreements.
