Poland’s Deputy Minister of Defense, Stanisław Żaryn, announced plans to significantly increase the size of the country’s military, aiming for a total of 500,000 personnel by 2035. This figure includes 300,000 professional soldiers and an additional 200,000 trained reservists.
During an interview, Żaryn outlined the Ministry of Defense’s strategy, emphasizing the importance of preparedness in the face of potential emergencies. He stated, “We are planning for an army that will consist of 500,000 military personnel, including 300,000 professional soldiers and 200,000 reservists, who will serve as a backup in case of emergencies.” The ministry anticipates achieving these goals between 2030 and 2035.
In 2025, Poland is projected to lead NATO in defense spending relative to its GDP. This commitment to military expansion aligns with broader European security concerns, particularly in light of recent geopolitical tensions.
In recent weeks, Poland’s participation in the EU SAFE program has become a focal point of political discourse. The program aims to secure approximately €44 billion in loans for military rearmament. However, there has been a notable rift between the government and President Karol Nawrocki regarding this initiative.
Nawrocki has vetoed legislation related to Poland’s involvement in the SAFE program, proposing instead his own version of a rearmament plan dubbed “SAFE 0%”, which would be funded through the Polish budget. Public opinion on this matter appears divided, with nearly equal support and opposition.
Despite the presidential veto, reports indicate that the EU continues to work on finalizing the loan for Poland, highlighting the ongoing complexities of military funding and national security in the region.
Poland's Deputy Minister of Defense has revealed plans to expand the military to 500,000 personnel by 2035, amid ongoing debates over EU funding for rearmament. The initiative reflects Poland's commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities in response to regional security challenges.
