In the early hours of February 22, Poland deployed fighter jets and activated its air defense systems in response to ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine. This action was confirmed by the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
Polish and allied aircraft were put on alert, with additional fighter pairs and early warning aircraft dispatched. Ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance units were also placed on standby.
The command stated that these measures were necessary due to the activities of Russian long-range aviation conducting strikes on Ukrainian territory during the night.
“These actions are preventive in nature. The operational command is monitoring the current situation, and the assigned forces and resources remain ready for immediate response,” the press release noted.
This marks the second instance in a week where Poland has raised its fighter jets, with the previous alert occurring on February 17, also in response to Russian aerial assaults on Ukraine.
According to reports from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian military forces have been attacking Ukraine with drones and missiles. Explosions were reported in several locations, including Kyiv and Kropyvnytskyi, as well as in Poltava and Mykolaiv, with sounds of blasts also detected in the Kyiv region.
