Over 8,000 Ukrainians Returned from Russian Captivity Amid Ongoing Efforts

Since the onset of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, more than 8,000 Ukrainians have been successfully returned from Russian captivity through over 70 exchanges. This includes both military personnel and civilians.

The figures were released by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, which noted the significant achievements over the past four years. The organization emphasized that while progress has been made, the work is far from over.

“Today is not a time for grand statements or celebrations. It is just another day where we document our progress and continue our efforts. Our principle remains unchanged: ‘Together for the sake of return.’ We understand the pain and fatigue of those still waiting. We are aware of each individual who remains in captivity,” the headquarters stated.

The Coordination Headquarters reiterated that there is still a considerable amount of challenging and often unseen work ahead. They assured that the efforts to bring Ukrainians home from Russian detention will not cease until all are accounted for.

The Coordination Headquarters was established on March 11, 2022, following government resolution No. 257. The first stage of prisoner exchanges occurred on March 5, when 200 individuals, including soldiers from the Armed Forces, the State Special Transport Service, border guards, and National Guard members, were returned home as part of agreements reached during negotiations in Geneva.

The second and final stage of this exchange took place on March 6, resulting in the return of an additional 300 military personnel and two civilians.

The ongoing efforts to return Ukrainians from Russian captivity have seen over 8,000 individuals successfully exchanged since the war began. The Coordination Headquarters emphasizes the need for continued work to secure the release of those still detained.
