Nigerian Airstrike on Market Claims Over 100 Lives in Yobe State

At least 100 individuals have been reported dead and many others injured following an airstrike by the Nigerian military on a market in northeastern Nigeria. The incident occurred during an operation targeting jihadist groups in the region.

The attack took place in Yobe State, an area known for its ongoing conflict with insurgent groups. Amnesty International confirmed the fatalities based on testimonies from survivors of the bombing.

The Yobe State government acknowledged in a statement that the military operation was aimed at a Boko Haram stronghold in the vicinity, noting that “some people who were visiting the Sunday market in Jilli were affected.” The air force regularly conducts strikes against armed groups that are believed to be hiding in forested areas.

Security analysts have pointed out that such tragic incidents often result from poor intelligence and a lack of coordination between ground forces and air support. According to estimates from the Associated Press, at least 500 civilians have lost their lives due to similar erroneous airstrikes since 2017.

A recent airstrike by the Nigerian military in Yobe State has resulted in significant civilian casualties, raising concerns about operational intelligence and coordination. This incident highlights ongoing challenges in combating insurgent groups in the region.
