New York Publisher to Release Photobook Documenting War in Ukraine

Red Hook Editions, an independent publishing house based in New York, is set to release a photobook titled Documentation of the War, featuring the work of Kharkiv photographer Vladyslav Krasnoshiok. This collection will showcase images taken from 2022 to 2025, capturing the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The publisher announced the upcoming release on its Instagram account, highlighting the book’s focus on the devastation of Ukrainian cities, military personnel, volunteers, and civilians, all documented by Krasnoshiok since the onset of the conflict.

Krasnoshiok shared insights with the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers, explaining that he initially aimed to capture everything within his lens during the early days of the invasion. “Of course, not everything was allowed to be photographed, as accreditation was required. Gradually, I shifted from topic to topic: destroyed buildings with people in the foreground, animals, military operations, the deceased… War has many faces,” he stated.

The photobook does not follow a strict chronological order. Instead, the arrangement of images is designed to immerse viewers in the realities of war progressively.

“I aimed to create a sequence of photographs that conveys the story of war, even without direct images of explosions or weapons,” Krasnoshiok remarked.

In addition to the photographs, the book will include personal notes from the author in both Ukrainian and English, along with a reference section detailing key historical events and statistics related to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

“Alongside my personal reflections, the book contains a reference insert with essential facts about our history. This is dry, yet necessary documentation, ranging from the declaration of independence to the signing of the Budapest Memorandum and the beginning of the annexation of Crimea,” Krasnoshiok explained.

The photographer employs an analog camera, developing and printing his images on silver gelatin paper.

On another note, a presentation for another book titled Notes on Living: Reflections on Ukraine Today will take place in Berlin on March 1. This publication features texts from contemporary Ukrainian authors discussing life during the war, including essays, diary entries, poetry, and reflections on societal psychological states, language policy, military experiences, and post-war prospects.

The book is complemented by illustrations from artists such as Maryhita Polovinko and David Chychkan, as well as an exhibition of their original works.

The event will feature psychoanalyst Yuliya Leites, curator and journalist Hanna Tsyba (widow of artist David Chychkan), curator Alya Segal (representing the legacy of Maryhita Polovinko), and editor Max Oylits.

Red Hook Editions will publish a photobook by Vladyslav Krasnoshiok documenting the effects of the war in Ukraine from 2022 to 2025. The book will feature personal reflections and historical context, highlighting the human impact of the conflict.
