Netflix has confirmed the production of a sequel to the acclaimed series “Peaky Blinders,” with creator Steven Knight at the helm. This new installment will introduce audiences to a fresh generation of the Shelby family, set in Birmingham in the early 1950s, a decade after World War II.
“I’m thrilled to announce a new era for ‘Peaky Blinders,’ moving the story into post-war Birmingham in the early 50s… A new generation of Shelbys is taking the reins, and it’s going to be a hell of a ride,” Knight stated.
Jamie Bell, known for his roles in “Rocketman” and “All of Us Strangers,” will portray Duke Shelby, the eldest son of Tommy Shelby, across two seasons of the upcoming series.
Joining Bell in the cast are Charlie Heaton from “Stranger Things,” Jessica Brown Findlay of “Downton Abbey,” and Lashana Lynch, who starred in “The Woman King.” Details regarding their specific roles have yet to be disclosed.
“There are more exciting casting announcements to come, and ‘Peaky Blinders’ is back on the road,” Knight added.
The sequel will consist of two new seasons, each containing six episodes. It will continue the narrative established in the original series, which concluded its sixth season in 2022, as well as the recent film “Peaky Blinders: The Immortal,” currently available on Netflix.
The release date for the new series has not been announced.
“Peaky Blinders: The Immortal” premiered on March 20 on Netflix. The platform acquired the rights to the original series for distribution in 2014, following its debut on BBC Two in 2013.
Since its inception, “Peaky Blinders” has become a cultural phenomenon, celebrated for its sharp writing, memorable dialogue, and high production values. The portrayal of the Shelby family as antiheroes, alongside the exploration of political and social issues of the time, has resonated with viewers globally.
The series has garnered numerous accolades, including:
- BAFTA TV Awards: Winner for Best Drama Series in 2018.
Additionally, Cillian Murphy received the award for Best Dramatic Performance at the National Television Awards in 2020.
- TV Choice Awards: Winner for Best Drama in both 2019 and 2020.
Murphy also won the Best Actor award at the Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA).
