NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has identified Iran as a significant factor in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In a recent interview, he stated that the pressures exerted by Israel and the United States could diminish Iran’s capacity to influence the situation in Ukraine.
Rutte emphasized, “Iran has been one of the key factors contributing to the Russian war against Ukraine, particularly through its provision of destructive weaponry, including drones.” He noted that the current geopolitical pressures on Iran may hinder its ability to export chaos, which could indirectly affect Russia and, by extension, Ukraine.
Furthermore, Rutte pointed out that the experience gained by the Ukrainian military in utilizing drones is now available to NATO partners in the Middle East. He remarked, “We are all learning from what is happening in Ukraine. Over the past four years, we have seen how Ukraine has acquired knowledge about drone technology and counter-drone strategies, which are now essentially accessible to our friends and partners in the Middle East. I consider this a positive development.”
Rutte has previously expressed that lasting peace in Europe is contingent upon achieving genuine peace in Ukraine. During his visit to Ukraine, he also confirmed that Western nations are contemplating three levels of security guarantees for the country. Additionally, he announced plans to secure over $15 billion for the procurement of weapons to support the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
