In a significant development, Moldovan President Maia Sandu has rescinded her earlier pardon for Nicolai Shepel, a citizen implicated in a conspiracy to assassinate public figures in Ukraine. This decision comes after new information emerged regarding Shepel’s involvement in serious criminal activities.
Shepel, born in 1995, was previously convicted in Russia for drug trafficking in 2017. He was later transferred to Moldova to serve his sentence, and in 2022, he was released following a pardon from President Sandu, which was granted after requests from both Shepel and the prosecution.
On February 19, Sandu’s administration announced the withdrawal of the pardon, citing new circumstances provided by relevant authorities. Reports indicate that Shepel, now 30, has been identified as a key figure and recruiter within a network allegedly orchestrating plans to eliminate prominent individuals in Ukraine.
This investigation, which involves both Moldovan and Ukrainian law enforcement, has revealed that the suspects were operating under the guidance of Russian intelligence services. They reportedly gathered detailed information on the movements and lifestyles of potential targets to facilitate planned assassinations for financial gain.
Three individuals arrested in Moldova have been placed in custody for a period of 30 days as the investigation continues.
