Mircea Lucescu, Renowned Romanian Football Coach, Passes Away at 81

Mircea Lucescu, a prominent figure in Ukrainian football, has died at the age of 81. His health deteriorated following a heart attack that led to his hospitalization, ultimately resulting in his passing.

In the wake of his death, two major Ukrainian football clubs, Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv, expressed their condolences and paid tribute to the influential coach. Lucescu spent a significant portion of his career in Ukraine, managing Shakhtar for 12 years before taking the helm at Dynamo for another three.

Sports media outlet Suspilne Sport highlighted five key moments that cemented Lucescu’s legacy in Ukrainian football history.

UEFA Cup Triumph (2009)

One of Lucescu’s most notable achievements came on May 20, 2009, when Shakhtar Donetsk triumphed over Werder Bremen with a score of 2-1 in the UEFA Cup final. This victory marked the club’s first European trophy, a milestone that remains unmatched in independent Ukraine.

Establishing the Brazilian Connection at Shakhtar

Even amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Shakhtar has maintained its status as a key destination for Brazilian footballers, a legacy that Lucescu began cultivating upon his arrival. Under his leadership, numerous Brazilian players flourished, with several moving on to top European clubs, including Fernandinho at Manchester City and Willian at Chelsea. The recent sale of Brazilian player Kevin to Fulham for €40 million underscores the impact of Lucescu’s recruitment strategy.

Champions League Quarterfinal Appearance (2010/11)

During the 2010/11 season, Lucescu guided Shakhtar to its best-ever performance in the UEFA Champions League. The team topped its group, which included Arsenal, and advanced past AS Roma in the Round of 16 before being eliminated by Barcelona in the quarterfinals. That Barcelona team, coached by Pep Guardiola, ultimately went on to win the tournament.

Return and Golden Treble with Dynamo (2020/21)

In 2020, Lucescu made a surprising return to Ukraine, this time as the head coach of Dynamo Kyiv, Shakhtar’s main rival. Initially met with skepticism from fans, Lucescu’s first season was a resounding success, as he led the team to win all available trophies, ending Shakhtar’s four-year dominance and qualifying for the Champions League group stage.

Record Holder for Trophies in Ukraine

Lucescu is recognized as the most decorated coach in the history of independent Ukraine, having amassed a total of 25 trophies—22 with Shakhtar and three with Dynamo:

  • 9 Ukrainian Championship titles
  • 7 Ukrainian Cups
  • 8 Ukrainian Super Cups

No foreign coach has managed more than 400 matches in the Ukrainian football league, a record held by Lucescu.
