Melania Trump to Chair UN Security Council Meeting on Education and Peace

On March 2, Melania Trump, the First Lady of the United States, will preside over a United Nations Security Council meeting, marking a historic first for the organization. This announcement was made on February 26 by the U.S. Mission to the UN and confirmed by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric.

The United States is set to assume the monthly rotating presidency of the Security Council in March, which consists of 15 member countries. During her address, Melania Trump will focus on the significance of education in promoting peace. Dujarric noted that the upcoming meeting is titled “Children, Technology, and Education in Conflict Situations.”

“The Trump administration continues to do more for global peace than any other in American history,” stated the U.S. Mission to the UN.

This event will be the first instance of a First Lady or First Gentleman leading a Security Council session. When asked by reporters if Melania Trump’s involvement could signal a positive shift in U.S.-UN relations, Dujarric emphasized the importance the U.S. places on the Security Council and the issues at hand.

In September 2025, President Donald Trump criticized the UN during a General Assembly session, claiming the organization was not fulfilling its potential and accusing it of exacerbating illegal migration through its actions regarding individuals fleeing dangerous regions.

In related news, Melania Trump has been active in efforts to return Ukrainian children taken by Russia from occupied territories. On December 3, U.S. Senate hearings addressed the abduction of these children, with testimonies highlighting the systemic nature of these crimes and calls for improved mechanisms to reunite minors with their families.

Earlier, Melania Trump reportedly sent a “peace letter” to Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the children, later announcing the return of eight Ukrainian children to their families. By December 4, her office confirmed that an additional seven children had been successfully returned to Ukraine after being unlawfully taken to Russia.

As of February, Melania Trump stated that she remains in contact with Putin’s team regarding the matter of returning Ukrainian children. On February 12, the White House and the First Lady’s office announced a third instance of Ukrainian children being reunited with their families through her mediation, although the exact number of children involved was not disclosed.

Melania Trump is set to make history by chairing a UN Security Council meeting on March 2, focusing on education's role in peace. Her involvement comes amid ongoing efforts to return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.
