Kennedy Center Awards to Continue as Trump-Kennedy Center During Renovation

The Kennedy Center will host its awards ceremony under a new name, the Trump-Kennedy Center Awards, while the venue undergoes a two-year renovation. This announcement was made by Richard Grenell, the center’s president, confirming that the event will take place at a different location.

According to Grenell, the awards will still occur, albeit in a smaller venue, which he anticipates will increase ticket demand. The Kennedy Center Honors, established in 1978, recognizes five artists annually for their significant contributions to the arts. Notable early recipients included Marian Anderson, Fred Astaire, George Balanchine, Richard Rodgers, and Arthur Rubinstein.

Traditionally, the awards weekend includes medal presentations, meetings with the President at the White House, and speeches during a dinner at the State Department. The festivities culminate in a star-studded ceremony at the Kennedy Center Opera House, where honorees interact with both political figures and Hollywood celebrities.

While former President Donald Trump broke with tradition by not attending the ceremony during his first term, he showed greater interest in the event during his second term. In 2025, Trump announced the award recipients himself, stating he was heavily involved in the selection process.

Following his inauguration, Trump dismissed all board members of the Kennedy Center, replacing them with allies who subsequently voted to make him the chair. Current board members include Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and Second Lady Usha Vance, alongside Grenell, who serves as president.

In December, the board voted to rename the center to the Trump-Kennedy Center, a decision that faced backlash from the Kennedy family, Democratic representatives, and artists who canceled performances in protest. Some lawmakers have argued that since the center’s name is rooted in a 1964 law, Congress must approve any official name change.

In February, Trump announced that the Trump-Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., would close for renovations on July 4, 2026, coinciding with the nation’s 250th anniversary. He expressed confidence that the revitalized building could become the premier performing arts venue globally.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts serves as the national cultural center of the United States, located on the eastern bank of the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Construction began in the 1950s, and following Kennedy’s assassination, Congress designated it as a living memorial in 1963. The center has been open since September 8, 1971, and serves as the official residence of the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera.

The Kennedy Center will continue its awards ceremony under the new title Trump-Kennedy Center Awards during a two-year renovation. This decision has sparked controversy and reflects ongoing changes within the center's leadership and structure.
