During a recent closed-door meeting at an EU summit, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed understanding for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s decision to block a €90 billion loan to Ukraine. This stance diverges from that of many other EU leaders who have criticized Orban’s actions.
Sources familiar with the discussions revealed that Meloni acknowledged the reasons behind Orban’s reversal on the loan, which he had initially approved in December. While she reiterated her support for providing immediate financial assistance to Ukraine, she also recognized Orban’s position, particularly as he faces upcoming elections.
One diplomat quoted Meloni stating that Orban’s stance is “normal” given the changing circumstances, adding, “If I were in the same situation, I would understand it.” Meloni noted that Orban had previously taken a constructive approach and suggested that he might lift the veto if the Druzhba oil pipeline resumes operations.
However, the Italian government has since denied these claims. A representative from Meloni’s office in Rome stated that the remarks attributed to the Prime Minister are “completely unfounded.” Meanwhile, other EU leaders reacted with outrage upon realizing that Orban remained firm in his position.
European Council President Antonio Costa condemned Orban’s decision as “unacceptable” and an unprecedented breach of established norms within the EU.
Background:
- On March 19, EU leaders discussed the €90 billion loan for Ukraine but failed to persuade Orban to lift his veto. Criticism was also directed at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his comments regarding Orban.
- Orban stated during the European Council meeting in Brussels that Hungary would not unblock any favorable decisions for Ukraine until the Druzhba pipeline begins transporting Russian oil again.
- Following the discussions on Ukraine, the European Council issued conclusions signed by 25 EU leaders, excluding Hungary and Slovakia.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni showed support for Viktor Orban's veto on Ukraine aid during an EU summit, drawing criticism from other leaders. Despite her backing, the Italian government later denied her statements, highlighting the ongoing tensions within the EU regarding support for Ukraine.
