Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to demolish homes in Lebanese villages near the border, aiming to establish a security buffer zone. This strategy mirrors operations previously conducted in Rafah and Beit Hanoun, with the intent to eliminate threats along the border.
Katz disclosed these intentions following a meeting with senior military officials on March 31. He stated,
“All houses in Lebanese border villages will be demolished — in line with the Rafah and Beit Hanoun model in Gaza.”
Upon completion of the operation, the Israeli military plans to create a new security zone extending to the Litani River, maintaining control over the area. Katz emphasized that the goal is to permanently remove threats near the border.
Additionally, he indicated that Israel would prohibit the return of over 600,000 residents from southern Lebanon to areas south of the Litani River until safety for northern Israeli residents is assured.
Katz further asserted that Israel aims to separate Lebanon from Iranian influence, stating the need to dismantle Hezbollah’s capabilities to pose a threat. He expressed a commitment to transform the situation in Lebanon through a sustained military presence.
