Ireland Launches Digital Wallet to Verify Age on Social Media

The Irish government has initiated a pilot program for a digital wallet that includes an age verification feature aimed at enhancing online safety for teenagers. This effort is part of a broader strategy to regulate access to social media platforms for younger users.

According to a statement from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, the new tool will facilitate age confirmation on social media, thereby helping to protect children and adolescents from potential online harm. The official launch of this testing phase took place on Friday.

Ireland joins several other European nations in seeking to limit teenagers’ access to social media. This initiative has gained momentum following Australia’s recent ban on social media usage for individuals under 16. Simon Harris, the Irish Minister for Finance, has highlighted the presence of teenagers on these platforms as a significant public health concern, particularly regarding its impact on mental health.

In addition to age verification, the digital wallet will also store digital versions of birth certificates, driving licenses, and other official documents. All European Union member states are required to implement similar systems by the end of 2026, although the specific applications will vary by country.

Ireland's new digital wallet aims to enhance online safety for teenagers by facilitating age verification on social media. This initiative reflects a growing trend in Europe to regulate youth access to digital platforms amid concerns over mental health.
