Intensified Fighting in Eastern Ukraine: Key Developments from February 15

On February 15, Ukrainian military officials reported a significant escalation in hostilities, with Russian forces launching 129 attacks throughout the day. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine noted ongoing shelling in border areas, particularly affecting several localities in the Sumy and Chernihiv regions.

In Sumy, towns such as Rohizne, Ryzhivka, and Prohres were among those impacted. Meanwhile, Chernihiv saw attacks in areas including Mykhalchyna Sloboda and Lyskyvshchyna. These incidents reflect a broader trend of intensified military activity along the eastern front.

Over two-thirds of the fighting concentrated on three key fronts: the Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk directions in Donetsk, and the Huliaipole direction in Zaporizhzhia. In the Kostiantynivka sector, Russian forces conducted 26 offensive operations near several settlements, including Kostiantynivka and Ilyinivka, with one attack still ongoing.

The Pokrovsk direction experienced the highest level of aggression, with 43 attempts by Russian troops to displace Ukrainian defenders from their positions. Areas of conflict included Kucherovyi Yar and Pokrovsk itself, where Ukrainian forces successfully repelled 39 of these assaults.

In the Huliaipole direction, there were 25 attacks reported, particularly around Huliaipole and advancing towards Dobropillia and Uspenivka. Ongoing airstrikes targeted regions such as Kam’yanka and Huliaipole, further complicating the situation.

Fighting has also been reported in the Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Lyman, Sloviansk, Oleksandrivka, and Orikhiv directions, indicating a widespread and coordinated Russian offensive.

Recent assessments from the monitoring project DeepState indicated that Russian forces have made advances within the urban limits of Pokrovsk, reportedly occupying around 95% of the town. This area remains the most active in terms of Russian assaults, underscoring its strategic significance.

Ukrainian military leadership, including Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi, has stated that Ukrainian forces continue to hold their ground in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, despite ongoing attempts by small groups of Russian troops to infiltrate northern areas of both cities. Syrskyi emphasized that Ukrainian defenses have thwarted several Russian attempts to seize control of these locations.

Fighting in Pokrovsk has persisted since October 2022, when Russian forces managed to breach the city after months of intense combat on its outskirts. The presence of Russian soldiers was quickly noted in the nearby town of Myrnohrad, further complicating the security landscape in the region.

The conflict in eastern Ukraine has intensified, with Ukrainian forces reporting 129 Russian attacks on February 15. Key areas of fighting include Pokrovsk and Kostiantynivka, where Ukrainian defenses are actively repelling assaults amidst ongoing airstrikes.
