On April 9, Ukrainian military officials reported a significant escalation in hostilities, with 134 combat engagements occurring throughout the day. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine detailed that Russian forces conducted a missile strike and launched 41 aerial assaults, dropping 125 guided bombs.
Additionally, the report indicated the deployment of 6,483 kamikaze drones and 2,566 artillery strikes targeting both civilian areas and Ukrainian military positions. Approximately half of the combat incidents were concentrated in three key areas: Pokrovsk, Kostyantynivka in Donetsk, and Huliaipole in Zaporizhzhia.
In the Kostyantynivka sector, Russian troops executed 22 assaults against Ukrainian defenses near the settlements of Stepanivka, Pleshchiyivka, Rusyn Yar, and Ivanopillia, with ongoing attacks reported. The Pokrovsk area witnessed 28 separate attacks, as Russian forces attempted to advance in regions including Ivanivka, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, and Shcherbaky.
The Huliaipole direction saw 17 assaults, particularly around the towns of Zaliznychne, Huliaipole, and Dobropillia, with five ongoing attacks noted. Combat also continued in the Southern Slobozhansky, Kupiansk, Lyman, Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, Oleksandrivka, and Dnipro directions.
In a broader context, the Russian military has been focusing its efforts on Pokrovsk since February 2024, following the capture of Avdiivka, located approximately 39 kilometers southeast of Pokrovsk. The city has a pre-war population of around 60,000 residents.
According to the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian counterattacks in the Huliaipole and Oleksandrivka areas are effectively disrupting Russian advances in the Pokrovsk sector, impacting their broader spring-summer offensive plans.
Recent reports from Ukraine indicate a sharp increase in combat activity, particularly in the eastern regions, as Russian forces intensify their assaults. The situation underscores ongoing military tensions and the strategic significance of key locations such as Pokrovsk.
