In a significant political shift, the opposition party Tisza has emerged victorious in Hungary’s parliamentary elections, securing a commanding majority. Preliminary results indicate that Tisza has won 137 seats, while Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party has obtained only 55 seats.
The official data released by the electoral commission confirms this outcome, with over 66% of votes counted. Following the results, Orbán acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Tisza leader Péter Madyar on the party’s success.
“Prime Minister Viktor Orbán congratulated us on our victory over the phone,” Madyar stated.
Leading up to the elections, voter surveys had suggested a favorable outcome for Tisza. The elections, held on April 12, witnessed a record voter turnout exceeding 77%, reflecting heightened public engagement in the political process.
