Hungarian Opposition Party ‘Tisa’ Secures Majority in Recent Elections

The Hungarian opposition party ‘Tisa,’ led by Peter Madyar, has achieved a commanding majority in the recent parliamentary elections, controlling over two-thirds of the votes.

According to preliminary results from the National Election Commission, ‘Tisa’ garnered 54.3% of the votes counted, while the ruling party ‘Fidesz’ received 37.5%. The far-right, pro-Russian party ‘Mi Hazank’ secured 5.8% of the votes.

Due to Hungary’s complex mixed electoral system, where most representatives are elected from single-member districts and votes are redistributed to national lists, the percentage of votes does not directly translate to parliamentary seats. Current media reports indicate that ‘Tisa’ is projected to obtain a guaranteed constitutional majority, with estimates suggesting they will secure 138 seats. In contrast, ‘Fidesz’ is expected to have 54 representatives, while ‘Mi Hazank’ will have 7.

To establish a constitutional majority, a party needs at least 133 votes. This significant advantage for ‘Tisa’ emerged following revelations about government actions that could be construed as treasonous in favor of Russia.

As noted in previous reports, the new administration will require two-thirds of the votes to overhaul the system established by Viktor Orban.

The Hungarian opposition party 'Tisa' has claimed a significant victory in the recent elections, securing a constitutional majority in parliament. This shift could lead to substantial changes in the political landscape, particularly in light of recent controversies surrounding the current government.
