Hungarian Opposition Leader Calls Upcoming Elections a ‘Referendum’ on National Identity

Peter Magyar, leader of the opposition party Tisza, has characterized the upcoming elections in Hungary as a pivotal ‘referendum’ on the country’s international alignment. He emphasized that the vote will determine whether Hungary continues its trajectory towards Eastern autocracies or reaffirms its place among democratic societies in Europe.

In an interview with the Associated Press, Magyar criticized Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for steering Hungary away from its Western orientation and fostering closer ties with Russia. He stated, “Hungarians still see that peace and development in Hungary are guaranteed by membership in the European Union and NATO. I believe this will truly be a referendum on our country’s place in the world.”

Magyar expressed confidence that his party would secure a decisive victory in the elections scheduled for April 12. He remarked, “I think Tisza will achieve a convincing victory in the elections, as even Fidesz voters do not want our country to become a Russian puppet state, a colony, or merely an assembly plant, instead of belonging to Europe.”

While outlining his vision, Magyar indicated that he would retain certain policies from Orbán’s Fidesz party if he were to become Prime Minister. These include measures aimed at curbing migration to Hungary and popular utility reduction programs.

Magyar also asserted that Hungary’s interests would take precedence over those of the European Union. He stated, “European leaders can expect a constructive position, but one that is critical and ready for discussion. We want to be at the negotiating table. The task of the Hungarian Prime Minister at any given time is to represent Hungarian interests, and when necessary, to do so with compelling strength.”

The elections in Hungary are set to take place on April 12.

Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza party, has labeled the upcoming Hungarian elections as a crucial referendum on the country's global alignment. He criticized Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's policies and expressed confidence in his party's potential victory.
