German Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for heightened pressure on Russia during a press briefing after his meeting with former President Donald Trump at the White House on March 3. He stated that Europe will not accept any agreements regarding Ukraine that do not involve its participation.
Merz highlighted that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has persisted for five years, resulting in over a million casualties. He asserted, “This war must end—not to give Russia a respite, but to conclude it once and for all.”
“This war has to end—not to give Russia a break, but to ensure it ends permanently,” he stated.
The Chancellor expressed serious doubts within Europe regarding President Putin’s willingness to agree to a peace settlement that would be acceptable for both Ukraine and Europe. He remarked, “Russia is buying time—and in doing so, is acting against the will of the American president.”
“Russia is gaining time—and, in doing so, is acting against the will of the American president,” he added.
During discussions, Merz advocated for intensified pressure on Moscow, believing that only with increased pressure from Washington would Putin be inclined to make concessions. He reiterated that Europe would not agree to any deal that overlooks the perspectives of European nations.
“Without the involvement of Europeans, there will be no agreement,” he stressed.
Concerning territorial issues, Merz left Washington with the impression that the U.S. administration understands Ukraine’s position that it cannot make further territorial concessions beyond the areas already occupied by Russia.
