The European Union is actively exploring strategies to mitigate the energy crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict in the Middle East, according to Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen. In an interview with the Financial Times, he indicated that the EU is considering measures such as fuel rationing and the release of additional oil from emergency reserves.
Jørgensen emphasized the likelihood of prolonged higher energy prices, stating, “This will be a long crisis… energy prices will remain elevated for a very long time.” He warned that the situation regarding certain critical products could worsen in the coming weeks.
In response to the crisis, Jørgensen has urged citizens to adopt energy-saving practices, such as working from home and reducing reliance on cars and air travel. Additionally, he called on EU member states to expedite the deployment of renewable energy sources.
Recent governmental actions reflect the urgency of the situation. On March 26, the German government approved a package of measures aimed at addressing the sharp rise in fuel prices resulting from the conflict. Following this, Poland implemented a decree on March 30 to reduce excise taxes on gasoline and diesel. On the same day, Norway’s Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg announced a temporary reduction in fuel taxes, effective April 1.
As the EU navigates these challenges, the focus remains on ensuring energy security and stabilizing prices in the face of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
